Alan Rickman (1946-2016) was an English actor, remembered in the role of Severus Snape, the enigmatic professor of the Harry Potter saga.

Alan Rickman Life Story

Alan Sidney Patrik Rickman, known as Alan Rickman, was born in Hummersmiyh, England, on February 21, 1946. The son of a London middle-class family, he lost his father at the age of eight.

Rickman attended Darwentwater Junior School, where he demonstrated a great aptitude for calligraphy and painting. He received a scholarship to the Latymer Upper School, where he first became involved in theatre.

Before dedicating himself to the profession that would ispire him, he studied at Chelsea College of Arts and Design. Worked for a short period in a design studio. Together with some friends, he started a graphic design company, “Graphiti”, but after three years he decided he wanted to be an actor.

Alan Rickman’s career began to take off in 1972, when he was written and accepted into the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA).

During the course, he worked as a costume assistant in the theater for actors such as Nigel Hawthome and Sir Ralph Richardson.

During this period, he won several GDR awards, including the Emile Little Prize, the Forbes Robertson and the Bancroft Golden Medal, an award given to the best student of the year.

When he finished his studies at RADA, he worked with various experimental theater groups with the plays “The Seagull” and “The Grass Windowde Snoo Wilson” at the Royal Court Theatre.

His television debut came in 1978, in a BBC network version of “Romeo and Juliet”.

In 1982 he joined the cast of the BBC series “The Barchester Chronicles“, where he played the reverend “Obadiah”.

While on the cast of the Royal Shakespeare Company, was nominated for a Tony for his role as the “Viscount of Valmont” in “Les Liaisons Dangereuses,” staged on Broadway in 1987.

With the success of the play, Alan Rickman was invited to join the cast of “Hard to Kill” (1988), in the role of the villain “Hans Gruber”, film that projected him internationally.

Alan Rickman also starred in “An Other World Novel” (1990), “Robin Hood: The Prince of Thieves” (1991), when he won the BAFTA for best supporting actor, and “Reason and Sensibility” (1995) – this year side of Emma Thompson, longtime co-worker.

In 1996 he received the Emmy Award and, in 1997, the Golden Globe for his performance in the miniseries “Rasputin”. That same year, he directed “A Little Chaos”, starring Kate Winslet.

Despite having been successful in plays, TV series and film, Alan Rickman has become best known for his role as the mysterious professor Severus Snape in the Harry Potter series.

Alan Rickman Death

Alan Rickman passed away in London, England, on January 14, 2016; at the age of 69, as a result of pancreatic cancer and only his close friend know that he was terminally ill.

In August 2015, Alan suffered a minor stroke, which revealed pancreatic cancer after diagnosis.
